Questions for my Japanese Students

Is it true that the family backgrounds of flight attendants on Japanese airlines are carefully researched to make sure that the flight attendants come from "good" families?

Can a man be a flight attendant on a Japanese airline?

Are the little toys and trinkets that Japanese people (especially girls) attach to their cell phones gifts from friends, or do people buy them for themselves?

Why don't people wear bike helmets in Japan (I didn't see a single one the whole time I was there). Or, why do you think so many Americans wear them?

Are smokers ok with the idea of smoking in designated areas on the street, or are they angry about this policy?

I've heard that they used to research applicants' backgrounds, in other "nice" jobs as well. I don't know about the latter question...

About bike helmets, I assume that it's just not cool, no matter if it's dangerous. But the more you leave from where you were in Japan, the more young people wear the helmets because they are forced to do so by schools.

As a smoker, I don't feel any inconvenience to it because compare to the stiation in NY, we can still smoke in restaurants!

Hi Jason!

It's Mariko, an ex-student from CES. It was eight years ago and it's been long time- I wish you remember me still.

I was surfing Japanese NY websites in my apartment in Tokyo to collect information for my vacation in early October...and found about encare and you! What a coincidence. I'm glad that you look doing great(and here in Tokyo). I knew that you got married and moved to New Jersey(my German friend Wolf brought your letter to me when he came to Tokyo six years ago), but...look at this beautiful little boy!! Your wife must be very beautiful as well! (oh, I know you are good looking guy but he is still too cute, so... :) )

Well, I hope you have a little time to write me back. Here's my e-mail address, m_nouchi@hotmail.com (Mariko Nouchi).

Take care and enjoy your stay!
Mariko
